The Women's Auxiliary - A Valued Asset
The Women’s Auxiliary began 28 years ago as a support group to the Big Brothers program. The first meeting was held on July 24, 1974 headed by Chairwoman, Jean Enders. The Women’s Auxiliary was formed to provide time, effort and fundraising to the program. Over their many years of service they have adjusted to the agency’s changing needs. It was the Women’s Auxiliary who bought the first computer for the office. A new idea at the time, that has grown into a real necessity. Their main focus on fundraising grew as funding needs of the program increased.
These caring women donate their time at special events including the Golf Tournament and Bowling Challenge. They represent the core of the volunteer efforts at these events. Big Brothers Big Sisters depends on this responsible, competent, group of women and the hours of volunteer service they provide.
The Women’s Auxiliary’s hard work and generosity is greatly needed and appreciated by the agency.
Over the years they have held various fundraisers to assist the program including pen sales, pecan sales, raffles, the Spring Flower Sales and Annual Poinsettia Sales. The proceeds from their efforts fund activities for Little Brothers and Little Sisters, including providing camp scholarships. Hundreds of children have benefited from their efforts.
Sandy Eder, the group’s current President is the only remaining original member. Sandy and the Auxiliary recognize that with changes in funding and programming that the agency needs the constant support of their group. Thousands of dollars have been raised to fund children’s programs and activities. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Flint is indebted to the Women’s Auxiliary for their dedication and service.
