Notes from the CEO...

As the Big Brothers Big Sisters Board of Directors, staff and community leaders meet to develop a strategic vision for the next four years, an ambitious objective to one day have more Bigs than Littles waiting is an exciting hope for our children.

Well-known anthropologist, Margaret Mead, said it best when she said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.”

The agency is guided by a vision and governed by principles of value and quality. As the expert in the field of mentoring, Big Brothers Big Sisters will develop the resources to expand services to all children in need of a positive role model.

While we have consistently had a waiting list over the past year of 300 children, our volunteer resources continue to grow as others join in the vision. From January to June 2008, thirty (30) men have been matched in one-to-one relationships with boys at risk of not meeting their full potential. This can be contributed in large part to our Monday’s Child, 100 Boys 100 Men Program, Mentor Michigan Challenge, Black Leaders 1000 Mentor Initiative and our many volunteers who have joined us in the challenge to reduce the number of children waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister.

The lack of much needed role models is not because of the lack of qualified mentors in Genesee County. We have an abundance of individuals that can have a positive influence. Let’s put the pressure on for the kids. Be a part of our current effort to recruit 100 Men in 90 days. This will put us one step closer to providing services to all children in need of a positive role model.
